Fly Fishing lodges: Arén and Santa Cilia

TASTE BACK IN TIME IN THE SPANISH PYRENEES

Our main fishing lodge: Arén

300 Years Farm-to-Table Tradition

In the heart of a 200-habitant medieval village surrounded by wilderness, the lodge presents a glorious setting for a fly-fishing expedition. Its deep history includes a traditional restaurant managed by Juan´s family for almost three centuries. Here, a fly fishing with accommodation with a family gathering feel prevails – log fires and communal dinners are complemented by an impeccable wine list carefully chosen by the sommelier. A premier service with the highest attention to detail, yet casual guest lodge, with one of the best off-the-radar gastronomic proposals in the region.

Best International Airport is Barcelona: it is a two and a half hour chauffeured drive to the lodge by Salvelinus.

Seven restored bedrooms equipped with twin beds or double-beds and a cozy terrace, on the first and second floors. The venue also has a massage room, a gym, a heated wader room, and an in-house fly shop with 10,000+ flies. Close by the lodge, there is an intimate restaurant with its wine cellar, for exclusive use of Salvelinus guests.

All meals have been served at the nearby family-owned restaurant since 1762, where the attention to culinary detail is deliciously evident. The menu features local, organic produce in traditional dishes. Every night, Salvelinus guests gather in the private wine cellar to savor the delicious local cuisine paired with exquisite Spanish wines.

Arén is right in the center of 7 main valleys and 30 tributaries, a strategic location to access hundreds of miles of trout waters in the highland, mid-country, and lowlands within short drives.
Main hatches from March to June. Summer means variety, including backcountry options. Stable weather in September-October, and prolific days on nymphs and streamers in November.

Real People, Unique Experiences

I must mention I would go back for the food and wine alone.

Best restaurant in the Pyrenees in the same family ownership for 300 years, very good accommodation acceptable to anyone with A.C., a complimentary bottle of wine on arrival as well as access to the Sauna. The “genuine article” !!!!!! (100%) as are the surroundings, Spain as she was and should be, children playing in the village square, locals sitting “en family” discussing what might or will happen as the sun sets – there can be no better.

To highlight we were treated as kings, dining was one of the most unique culinary experiences ever. Honestly, one of the best restaurants we’ve ever tried.

Spain’s First Fly Fishing Lodge: Santa Cilia

Back in 2001, on the banks of the Aragón River along the Way of St. James, Salvelinus established the first fly-fishing lodge in Spain. Since its beginning, Santa Cilia served as a meeting point for merchants, pilgrims, San Juan de la Peña monks, winemakers, and all those who followed the course of the Pyrenees’s waters to the Mediterranean Sea. Any direction you take from the lodge will lead you to prolific freestones, gin-clear lakes, and interesting tailwaters inhabited by native browns.

Best International Airport is Barcelona: it is three and a half hour chauffeured drive to the lodge by Salvelinus.

This 15th Century villa, restored as a fly fishing lodge, is equipped with four country-style rooms with views of the Aragón river. Two suites and two bedrooms with twin beds or double bed. All rooms have access to a private outdoor terrace and an indoor lounge, the palace’s 15th-century wine fermentation room. Santa Cilia also has a massage room, a fly shop, and a waders room.

The dining room is a rustic and traditional stone building, part of the 15th-century palace. All meals present a comprehensive selection of Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine elaborated with local produce. The cellar has an excellent wine selection Salvelinus curated from some of the best national wineries. Both lunch and dinner are paired with high-end wines from the Pyrenees and other prestigious wine regions such as Rioja or Priorat.

Santa Cilia has always served as a base for accessing the favorite waters of Salvelinus guides. The sizable browns of the region are not easy, but after so many years fly fishing and guiding this specific area, Salvelinus guides will pick up the best timing and show you how to catch those trophy specimens.
From March to late June, the area undoubtedly offers the Pyrenees’ best hatches. July to late October bring prime chopper opportunities for the highlands, and for trophy trout in the mid-country to tailwater fisheries.

“One of the most authentic places in Spain to discover culinary traditions and habits of the country”

The Pyrenees’ Heart

Santa Cilia village, with less than 300 inhabitants, is a cozy location to explore the infinite Pyrenees’ water formations bound to adventure, cultural landmarks, national parks and mountain villages. This picturesque region of Spain will enchant you with its medieval architecture, exciting fishing, and genuinely welcoming people.
